Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) / Tubular Covered Conductors (TCC) Systems
SLIDE 1 — What Is IBP?
🔧 NEW ARTICLE, SPECIALIZED SYSTEM
Article 369 was created during the 2023 NEC cycle for Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP), also known as Tubular Covered Conductors (TCC). Requires listing, installation by QUALIFIED PERSONS ONLY, manufacturer-supplied terminating means, and documentation available to the AHJ.
📋 Listing (369.2): IBP and IBP systems — both listed.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (369.3): IBP and IBP systems NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted & NOT Permitted
✅ USES PERMITTED (369.10)
✅ Exposed runs per 305.12
✅ Wet/damp locations — ONLY when listed for it
✅ Through walls in unbroken lengths — wall-penetrating sections must be listed for OUTDOOR use, opening sealed by approved method
✅ Vertically through dry floors — totally enclosed in metal for at least 6 ft (1.8m) above the floor
✅ Voltages up to 35,000V AC nominal
🚫 USES NOT PERMITTED (369.12)
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless another article permits)
❌ Support of luminaires/equipment
❌ Concealed by building structure
❌ Accessible to non-qualified persons
SLIDE 3 — Installation, Termination & Ratings
👷 INSTALLATION (369.14): by QUALIFIED PERSONS only, documentation available to AHJ.
🔌 TERMINATION (369.20): manufacturer-supplied terminating means REQUIRED. Avoid dissimilar metal connections (galvanic action risk).
📊 AMPACITY & TEMPERATURE (369.80, 369.90): used within the marked ampacity AND maximum rated conductor temperature — no exceeding either.
SLIDE 4 — Construction & Marking + Exam Question
🏗️ CONSTRUCTION (369.100)
Conductor: aluminum or copper. Bus pipe CAN be solid or hollow.
🔥 FIRE BARRIERS (369.110): required at fire wall/floor/ceiling penetrations.
🏷️ MARKING (369.120): max rated voltage (phase-to-phase/ground), max ampacity, manufacturer identification, equivalent AWG/kcmil size, max conductor temperature, peak withstand current rating, enclosure type (if not Type 1), and short-time withstand rating (if over 2 seconds).
🎉 That wraps up Article 369 — Insulated Bus Pipe Systems!
