Liquidtight Flexible Nonmetallic Conduit (LFNC) — Scope & Uses
SLIDE 1 — What Is LFNC?
💧 THE NONMETALLIC VERSION OF LFMC
LFNC combines flexibility AND liquidtight protection, but WITHOUT the metal core of LFMC. Great for applications needing flexibility, moisture protection, AND no metal.
📋 Listing (356.2): LFNC AND its fittings — both listed.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (356.3): LFNC and fittings are NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted (356.10)
✅ FLEXIBLE, PROTECTIVE, AND VERSATILE
✅ Exposed OR concealed — where flexibility is needed for install/operation/maintenance
✅ Protection from vapors, machine oils, liquids, or solids
✅ Outdoor locations — IF listed/marked for that purpose
✅ Direct burial — IF listed/marked for that purpose
✅ Lengths LONGER than 6 ft — IF secured per 356.30
✅ LFNC-B as a listed manufactured PREWIRED assembly, trade sizes ½–1
✅ Encasement in concrete — IF listed for direct burial, per 356.42
✅ Severe corrosive influences (per 300.6) — where specifically approved
✅ Higher-temp-rated conductors CAN be used inside — as long as they don't operate above LFNC's listed temp rating
⚠️ Extreme cold note: some nonmetallic conduits become brittle and more damage-prone in very cold temperatures.
SLIDE 3 — Uses NOT Permitted (356.12)
🚫 WHERE LFNC CANNOT GO
❌ Subject to physical damage
❌ Ambient/conductor temperature combos EXCEEDING the listed rating
❌ Lengths LONGER than 6 ft — EXCEPT as permitted by 356.10(5), or where approved as essential for required flexibility
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless another article permits)
📌 That 6-ft length restriction has a built-in exception — always check if the longer run qualifies under 356.10(5) or is specifically approved for flexibility needs.
SLIDE 4 — Sizing + Exam Question
📏 SIZE LIMITS (356.20)
Minimum: trade size ½ — Exception: trade size ⅜ permitted for:
1️⃣ Enclosing motor leads (430.245(B))
2️⃣ Lengths ≤6 ft as part of a listed assembly for luminaire tap connections (410.117(C)) or utilization equipment
Maximum: trade size 4
🔢 Conductor fill (356.22): per Chapter 9, Table 1 — with SEPARATE sub-tables for LFNC-A, LFNC-B, and LFNC-C (three distinct LFNC types with different construction).
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
Q: Per 356.12(3), what is the maximum length LFNC can be installed without meeting an exception, before securing/support rules kick in differently?
A) 3 ft
B) 6 ft
C) 10 ft
D) There is no length limitation
