⚡ GROUNDING & BONDING — EP 11
Gunite Pools Don’t “Get Grounded” — They Get Bonded ⚠️

⚡ OPENING HOOK
Gunite pools don’t fail because of wiring mistakes…
They fail because electricians treat them like normal grounding jobs.
NEC 680 isn’t about grounding the pool — it’s about eliminating voltage differences.
🧠 CORE IDEA
⚡ Pools are an equipotential bonding system, not just a grounding system
NEC 680.26 requires ALL conductive parts to be tied together so no voltage difference can exist.
That includes:
• Reinforcing steel (rebar) in gunite shell
• Pool water
• Metal ladders, rails, and fittings
• Pump motors and equipment
• Perimeter bonding grid (where required)
👉 The goal is NOT “sending fault current to earth.”
👉 The goal is to make everything the SAME electrical potential
⚠️ BIG MISCONCEPTION
“Bond it to ground, and it’s safe.”
Wrong.
Grounding ≠ shock protection in pools.
You can have a perfect ground and still have dangerous voltage gradients in the water or deck.
That’s why NEC 680 separates bonding from traditional grounding logic.
🔥 WHY IT MATTERS
• Prevents lethal step and touch voltage
• Stops voltage differences between water + deck + metal parts
• Critical during rough-in before gunite pour
• Once concrete is poured, mistakes become permanent or extremely costly
📌 CORE TAKEAWAY
⚡ Pools aren’t protected by grounding alone
⚡ They are protected by equipotential bonding
⚡ Every conductive surface must be electrically equalized
⚡ FINAL LINE
In pool work, the danger isn’t missing a ground…
It’s missing a bond before the gunite locks everything in forever.
