Some electrical systems generate and manage all of their own power.
⚡ A Stand-Alone System is an electrical system that is not connected to an electric power production and distribution network.
Instead, it supplies power independently using one or more on-site energy sources.
Common examples include:
☀️ Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
🔋 Battery energy storage systems (ESS)
🌬️ Wind turbines
⚙️ Engine generators
🏕️ Remote cabins and off-grid installations
These systems are completely independent of the utility grid.
NEC Article 710 establishes the installation requirements for stand-alone power systems.
Because these installations often combine multiple energy sources and stored energy, the Code requires additional safeguards.
Key requirements include:
✔ Listed or field-evaluated equipment
✔ Proper system identification
✔ Safe installation of power sources and energy storage
The goal is reliable off-grid power without compromising electrical safety.
