SPARKY BREAKDOWN — EP 4
WHY APPROVAL MATTERS
joshthesparky4 · Josh The Sparky
This is the part that made bonding finally click for me.
It’s NOT about grounding.
It’s about something way more important in pool safety.
This is EP 4 of my Article 680 breakdown series.
We’re breaking down the real reason bonding exists around pools and similar installations.
Bonding exists to eliminate voltage differences.
Not to “send fault current to earth”…
Not to replace grounding…
But to control something more dangerous in water environments:
potential differences between conductive surfaces
Around pools you can have:
Different metal surfaces
Different electrical potentials
Water acting as a conductor
If those potentials are not equalized…
the human body becomes the path between them
Handrails
Ladders
Pumps
Rebar (in structure)
Water itself
Even small voltage differences matter in water.
Bonding forces everything to the same electrical potential
So there is:
No voltage gradient
No “across-the-body” current path
Bonding is NOT grounding
Bonding does NOT “fix faults”
Bonding removes voltage differences
The hazard is potential difference, not just current capacity
Water environments amplify small voltage imbalances
Bonding = equipotential system design
All conductive parts in the pool zone must be tied together
The goal is zero voltage difference between accessible surfaces
Human body should never complete a circuit between metal parts
This is why Article 680 is so strict about bonding rules
Bonding isn’t about “sending electricity somewhere.”
It’s about making sure there’s nowhere for electricity to push through you.
