SPARKY BREAKDOWN — EP 13
POOL BONDING EXPLAINED
joshthesparky4 · Josh The Sparky
OPENING HOOK
Pool bonding isn’t about grounding —
It’s about making sure you don’t become the path.
And yeah… this is one of the most misunderstood (and dangerous) parts of the NEC.
EPISODE OVERVIEW
This is EP 13 of my Article 680 breakdown series.
We’re getting into equipotential bonding for pools — what it actually does, and why it matters way more than people think.
CORE IDEA
Bonding is NOT the same as grounding.
Equipotential bonding keeps everything at the same voltage around the pool, so there’s no difference in potential — meaning no current flows through you.
WHAT THE NEC IS DOING (ARTICLE 680 — POOLS)
The code isn’t just trying to “ground stuff.”
It’s trying to eliminate voltage differences in areas where your body is wet and vulnerable.
That’s the real danger.
KEY COMPONENTS
THE 3 FT PERIMETER RULE
Everything within 3 feet horizontally of the pool must be bonded.
This includes surfaces you can stand on and touch at the same time.
BONDING GRID
A conductive grid (typically #8 solid copper) installed around the pool area.
Creates a shared electrical plane to equalize voltage.
WHAT MUST BE BONDED (IN-GROUND POOLS)
Pool water
Metal parts of the pool structure
Ladders, rails, diving boards
Deck reinforcing steel
Electrical equipment (motors, pumps, etc.)
If it’s conductive and reachable, it probably needs bonding.
WHY THIS MATTERS
If bonding is done wrong (or skipped), you can have voltage differences between:
Water
Deck
Metal parts
That’s how people get shocked — or worse.
CORE TAKEAWAYS
Bonding ≠ grounding
It’s about equal voltage, not fault clearing
3 ft perimeter rule is critical
Bonding grid ties everything together
Miss it = serious shock hazard
FIELD / EXAM TAKEAWAYS
Know what needs bonding under Article 680
Understand the purpose — not just memorization
Expect questions on perimeter and grid requirements
This is a HIGH-risk, HIGH-test topic
FINAL TAKEAWAY
Electricity doesn’t need much — just a difference in potential.
Bonding makes sure that the difference doesn’t exist. ⚡
