⚡ GROUNDING & BONDING — EP 10
“Best Grounding Electrode?” Doesn’t Exist ⚠️

⚡ OPENING HOOK
“Best grounding electrode?” is the wrong question.
NEC doesn’t rank electrodes like a leaderboard — it defines what qualifies and when you MUST use them together.
🧠 CORE IDEA
⚡ There is no “best” electrode… only available, required, and bonded
NEC 250.50 is the key rule:
👉 If multiple grounding electrodes exist at a building, they MUST be bonded together into one grounding electrode system.
That includes:
• Concrete-encased electrode (Ufer)
• Metal underground water pipe
• Structural steel (if effectively grounded)
• Ground rods/pipe/plate electrodes
• Ground rings
⚠️ You don’t choose one. You use ALL that apply.
❌ COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING
“Just install two rods, and you’re good.”
Not always.
NEC doesn’t say “two rods equal a compliant system.”
It says electrodes are used as required, and existing ones can’t be ignored.
🔥 WHY THIS MATTERS
• Prevents incomplete grounding systems
• Avoids hidden parallel fault paths
• Stops “selective grounding” field mistakes
• Common exam trap: picking ONE correct answer when multiple apply
📌 CORE TAKEAWAY
⚡ There is no “best” grounding electrode
⚡ There is only what exists + what NEC requires to be bonded
⚡ The system matters — not the individual part
⚡ FINAL LINE
Grounding isn’t about picking winners…
It’s about building a complete system that the NEC has already defined.
