SPARKY BREAKDOWN — EP 11
WHY APPROVAL MATTERS
joshthesparky4 · Josh The Sparky
Installing a pool heater isn’t just plumbing… ⚡
it’s serious electrical work.
And around water, “close enough” doesn’t cut it.
This is EP 11 of my Article 680 breakdown series.
We’re covering the electrical safety requirements and risks involved with pool heating equipment.
Pool heaters combine two high-risk systems:
Electricity + water + continuous heat exposure
That combination demands strict compliance with NEC Article 680.
Pool heating equipment introduces:
Continuous electrical load near water
Metallic equipment exposed to corrosive environments
Increased chance of fault conditions
Higher likelihood of shock exposure if improperly installed
All conductive parts must be tied into the equipotential bonding system
Prevents voltage differences around heater equipment
Equipment grounding conductor ensures fault current path
Enables breaker/fuse operation during faults
Installation must follow NEC Article 680 requirements
Includes clearances, wiring methods, and equipment listing requirements
Improper pool heater installation can lead to:
Stray voltage in water
Energized metal surfaces
Failed protective device operation
Increased risk of electric shock or injury
Pool heater safety is not one system—it’s multiple layers:
Bonding → eliminates voltage differences
Grounding → clears faults
Protection devices → reduce shock risk
All three must work together.
Pool heaters fall under NEC 680 electrical safety rules
Bonding is required to control voltage gradients
Grounding provides fault-current path
Installation quality directly impacts swimmer safety
Water + electricity demands strict compliance
Pool heaters are electrical equipment first, plumbing second
Multiple safety systems must work together
Improper installation creates life-safety hazards
NEC 680 governs all aspects of pool-related electrical equipment
There is no margin for shortcut installs
If you’re working around pools…
do it the right way the first time.
Because mistakes near water don’t stay small.
