⚡ SPARKY BREAKDOWN — NEC QUICK HIT
WRONG BOX FOR THE JOB — NEC 314.20 / 314.27
joshthesparky4 · Josh The Sparky
OPENING HOOK
Not all boxes are created equal. ⚠️
And using the wrong one? Easy way to fail fast.
CORE IDEA
Electrical boxes aren’t interchangeable — they’re listed and rated for specific uses.
Fixture support, device mounting, wall finish depth —
All of it matters when selecting the right box.
“It fits” doesn’t mean it’s approved to hold, support, or protect what you’re installing.
CODE CONNECTION
NEC 314.27 covers boxes used for supporting luminaires and equipment.
If it’s holding weight, it must be listed for that purpose.
NEC 314.20 requires boxes to be flush or properly set relative to the finished surface —
especially in combustible materials.
Wrong box, wrong application = violation.
FINAL TAKEAWAY
If the box isn’t rated for the job… It’s not the right box. ⚠️
Loose fixtures, stressed conductors, failed inspections —It
all starts with bad box selection.
Check the listing. Check the rating. Install it right the first time. ⚡
